Congressman Robert Hurt today released the following statement after the Department of Labor issued the April unemployment report:

“The people of the 5th District continue to suffer under Washington’s failed policies which have driven up the cost of fuel, expanded the size and scope of the federal government, and led us into nearly 16 trillion dollars of unsustainable debt. Today is yet another reminder of how those policies continue to affect the people that I represent as we learn that the national unemployment rate has remained over an unacceptable 8% for over three years. My travels across the 5th District this past week have provided a clear indication of the dire need to advance policies in Washington that will limit the size and scope of the federal government, adopt a commonsense energy policy, and restore order to our fiscal house. The state of our economy continues to be the top concern for the people of the 5th District and it is due time that the President and the Senate join with the House in listening to those that we represent and take action on House-passed legislation that will get 5th District Virginians and Americans across this country back to work.”
